LOWESTOFT VOLUNTEER BEACH LIFEGUARD CORPS
EST:1952
OVER THE NEXT 7 MONTHS WE WILL BE MAKING SOME MAJOR CHANGES IN LOWESTOFT
For us its an exciting time, the corps is 60 years old next year and we are now getting our own hut in the pakefield end of the award winning Lowestoft beach after trying for the last 20 years. We will be doing several sponsored events over the next 7 months to help raise the capital and will keep everyone updated on the fund total and where we what to be. For the moment its still in the hands of Lowestoft Planning department so when that phase is complete we can bring you more information.
What do we do?
The Corps provides water safety cover and first aid at annual community events such as the Lowestoft Seafront Air festival, Pier to Pier swim and Christmas day swim. These community events could not go ahead without the support from the volunteer Lifeguards. The Corps deliver water safety talks to community groups such as scouts, guides and local schools. To give an excellent service to the community all member attend regular training and volunteer their time to benefit the community directly.
How do we support the local community?
These events bring people from different back grounds and abilities together, and gives individuals the chance to fundraise and keep fit. It is also a great way to pull the community together. The Corps provides an opportunity for people to obtain a National Qualification to access voluntary or paid work as a Beach Lifeguard. Through the water safety talks given to local children’s community groups and schools this gives children awareness and keeps them safer on our beaches.
What are we planning?
The Corps is looking to have its own premises to allow the Corps to grow, attract new members, and have the security needed for the future. The Corps is always looking at new ways to attract new volunteers so have started to engage in surf lifesaving adding a new dimension. The Corps would like to purchase new equipment in order to allow members a chance to improve there skills, which would raise the profile and increase voluntary service hours which will benefit the local community.
